3 Of The Best Energy Supplements

‘Without passion you don’t have energy, without energy you have nothing.’ Donald Trump

Energy is the dynamic force that drives you forward and keeps you both physically and mentally active. You need energy for everything you do – from walking, running and playing sports to thinking, storing memories and overcoming emotional stress. High levels of energy help you cope with modern life, but fatigue, is among the most common of modern complaints.

Occasional lack of energy is normal, but listlessness can creep up on you so you feel washed out and exhausted for much of the time. Surveys suggest that one in three women and one in five men admit to feeling tired or lacking in energy on a regular basis, with one in ten adults admitting to feeling exhausted for a month or more. The following energy supplements can help to boost your ‘get up and go’.

Review: Healthspan Ubiquinol Max

Ubiquinol Max was designed by a cardiologist to help support the heart, increase energy levels and overcome fatigue. Many supplements provide coenzyme Q10 or omega-3 fish oil, but few contain the two, or combine them with other micronutrients to help boost energy as well as heart health.

The daily dose of two capsules Ubiquinol Max provides:

  • 100mg ubiquinol – the active form of coenzyme Q10
  • 1.1mg vitamin B1
  • 80mg vitamin C
  • 28mg magnesium
  • 15mg vitamin E
  • 360mg omega 3 fatty acids (260mg DHA, 50mg EPA)

I take Ubiquinol Max at night (along with my other supplements) as this is the easiest time for me to remember, washed down with my nightly chamomile tea. However, as an energy supplement they are probably best taken in the morning.

Ubiquinol is the active, body-ready form of coenzyme Q10, which is needed for the chemical reactions that release energy from burning fats.

Vitamin B1 is needed for the production of energy from glucose in cells, while magnesium is involved in almost all energy-yielding reactions in the body, as well as having a relaxing effect and promoting restful sleep.

Vitamin C is needed to metabolise stress hormones and helps to reduce tiredness, weakness and fatigue.

Omega 3 fats boost the absorption of ubiquinol, and also boost the ability to think straight and support heart health. The vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that protects cells against oxidative stress.

Other products that combine ubiquinol with omega-3 are available but without the additional vitamins and minerals.

Review: Pharmaton Vitality Capsules

Pharmaton Vitality Capsules are unusual among vitamin and mineral supplements as they are licensed by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), as a medicine, for :

  • The relief of short periods of daily fatigue associated with a busy hectic lifestyle, causing temporary symptoms of exhaustion (eg due to stress) tiredness and a feeling of weakness or lack of vitality (loss of energy)
  • The prevention and treatment of symptoms caused by an unbalanced diet.

Pharmaton Vitality Capsules contain an adaptogenic herb, Panax Ginseng, which is traditionally used to help the body adapt to stress, plus vitamins and minerals. Each capsule provides:

Take one Pharmaton Vitality capsule a day, swallowed down with water. It is best taking in the morning with food.

As a licensed medicine, you can read the Pharmaton Vitality Patient Information Leaflet HERE

I have recommended Pharmaton Vitality Capsules to many patients over the years, all of whom have reported benefit.

You can take Pharmaton Vitality together with Ubiquinol Max if you wish.

Review: Vitano Rhodiola Tablets

Vitano Rhodiola rosea root extract is also licensed by the MHRA as a traditional herbal medicine. Each tablet provides 200mg Rhodiola rosea root and is indicated for:

  • The temporary relief of symptoms associated with stress, such as fatigue, exhaustion and mild anxiety.

Rhodiola is an adaptogenic herb that is both calming and energising. Its active ingredients can lift a low mood, reduce the effects of stress hormones and reduce anxiety.

Rhodiola is particularly helpful when fatigue is due to physical and emotional stress, which leaves you feel drained of energy and burned out with difficulty sleeping.

Rhodiola’s energising effect can enhance performance and improve alertness, concentration, memory, stamina and sleep quality.

Rhodiola is taken by many doctors and nurses to help see them through long hours and night duty. Research shows it can help to improve mental performance, concentration and the ability to think straight.

Rhodiola is also used to help lower a high blood pressure that is raised due to stress.

Rhodiola is commonly known as mountain ginseng and is used to reduce the physical effects of high altitude. I took it when trekking along the original Inca Trail to Machu Picchu and did not get the headaches or fatigue that affected many of my colleagues.

Take 2 Vitano tablets daily, one before breakfast, and one before lunch. Swallow the tablets whole, with a glass of water, 30 minutes before food.

As it is a licensed medicine, you can read the Vitano Patient Information Leaflet HERE

Other Rhodiola products are also available.

You can take Rhodiola root extracts together with Ubiquinol Max if you wish.

If your lack of energy is persistent or getting worse, do see your doctor in case there is an underlying medical cause. Click here to find they reasons why you may feel so tired all the time.

Hi Jackie, In general, you can take vitamin and mineral supplements with this medication but you will need to individually check for each herbal medicine as interactions can occur. There is a great drug-herb interaction checker at drugs.com. DO check with yoru prescribing doctor, too. Best wishes, Sarah B
